Narrative Full Thrust Battle Report

I played a little mixed-fleet game of Full Thrust yesterday.

In Fleet A, we had an Omega-class Destroyer, a Battlestar (original series), and my Railgun Gunstar.

The Omega has Beam batteries and Grasers.  The Battlestar has Grasers, Pulse torpedoes, and Beam batteries.  The Railgun Gunstar has, you guessed it, a massive class-6 kinetic gun, and some beam batteries on the side.

In Fleet B, we had two Vorchans, a Berzerk Gunstar, a Battlestar (new series), and my own creation, a Pulsar Heavy Cruiser.

The Vorchan is equipped with Pulse torpedoes and beam batteries.  The Berzerk has salvo missiles and beam batteries.  The Battlestar features a lot of beam batteries and point defense.  The Pulsar is outfitte with 4 wide-arc Grasers, two kinetic guns, and a needle beam.

The game was played with vector movement rules and no terrain.

The two fleets approached each other, accelerating to move into attack range.  The Berzerk Gunstar had the Omega Destroyer at the edge of its missile range, but elected not to fire any salvos without a clear shot.  The two Vorchans opened fire on the Battlestar with their pulse torpedoes and scored one hit, doing minor damage on the ship's armor.

As the fleets closed to firing range, the Berzerk Gunstar began moving out in a flanking maneuver and launched two missile salvos.  One missed completely and failed to lock on, and the other locked onto the old Battlestar but was shot down by point-defense.  The Railgun Gunstar unleashed a massive projectile that ripped through a Vorchan's hull, crippling it.  The batteries on the Gunstar finished off the Centauri vessel, and it exploded in debris.  The other Vorchan fired on the Railgun Gunstar in retaliation and scored minor damage with a pulse torpedo.  Then the massive old Battlestar got into the action, locking into the Vorchan with its graser batteries and vaporizing the smaller cruiser as it zoomed into close range.  The Omega Destroyer let loose its grasers on the Pulsar Cruiser and destroyed the ship's armor layer, doing enough damage to destroy its kinetic gun batteries and one engine in an internal explosion.  The Pulsar returned fire, damaging the Omega's armor but missing any vital systems.  Emergency repair crews were dispatched and managed to bring the Pulsar's engine back online.

The two fleets began to sail past each other, turning and slowing down to try to bring weapons to bear again as they tried to reverse their momentum.  At closer ranges, the Berzerk unleashed another flurry of missiles, this time at the Omega and old Battlestar.  Both missile salvos locked on, but were again shot down by all point defense guns.  The Railgun Gunstar fired its massive gun at the Berzerk, but the projectile sailed wide, missing.  The Pulsar Cruiser sailed behind the Omega's engine wake, and found a shot at the Railgun Gunstar.  It fired all 4 graser batteries, scoring hits and blasting through the hull.  Nearly every system was knocked out, and the power core began to lose containment.  The Gunstar crew had no choice but to abandon ship, leaving the hulk adrift, which detonated after a short time.  The old Battlestar along with the Omega Destroyer found the newer Battlestar directly in between them, and let loose a bloody crossfire with their graser batteries that shredded the hull and knocked out an engine and beam battery.

The old Battlestar and Omega Destroyer fought to slow their momentum, turning ponderously in space and firing thrusters.  The Berzerk fired it's final missile salvos at the Omega and Battlestar, and finally scored a hit on the Battlestar with 4 missiles, scoring a lot of damage but failing to destroy any systems.  The Omega blasted away with point defense, destroying the missiles locked on to it.  The main guns of the Berzerk finally whittled away at the Omega's hull enough to destroy one of its engines and a fire-control system.  The Omega could only bring its beam batteries to bear on the long-ranged Pulsar Cruiser, and scored a lucky hit to the cruiser's life-support systems.

The Omega and Battlestar began to slow to a stop, and the Berzerk and Pulsar sailed away with high momentum.  Fleet B knew they were outgunned by the two battleships and elected to flee the battle.  The Pulsar's last act was to repair their life-support systems and flee the system.

Victory for Fleet A!  Turns out Grasers are pretty darn good!
